  1. I have no knowledge of Na’vi, and I was just browsing when I noticed many similarities to the Hebrew language. I have been learning Hebrew for over three years now, and although not close to fluent, I have a basic understanding. I have listed some cross-language similarities below. The format is Na’vi word: Na’vi meaning (Hebrew word): Hebrew meaning.

    awnga: We (Anachnu): We, us
hametsì: leavened bread (Hamets): leavened bread
    hapxì: part (Hatzi): Half, middle
matsa: crakers (Matsa): Jewish unleavened bread, similar to crackers
meyam: hug, embrace (combination of me (as in medical) and yam/yad): me means from, and yam means sea, but sounds like yad, hand. And so, from hand.

Please tell me your opinion on this.

    Thanks.

  2. hi there im laura im a avatar lover and of couse im into speaking navi i know this may be hard to develop but im sure it would help many people if you added a recording for each word so people would know how to pronounce it because i know that the spelling most often is not spelled the way it is to be pronounced.

All help is GREATLY appriciated Eywa be with you,
    -Laura

      • Actually, because Na’vi is a spoken language, all the “writing” we have here is a literal transcript, which means that the spelling is insanely consistent. Once you learn the sound each letter(or letter pair) makes, it’s obvious what every word sounds like as long as you learn the syllable stress while learning words. One letter, one sound. Nearly always. Very seldom do we get discrepancy. Most notably is the forms of oe. (oe is “OH-eh”, oel is “WEL”, oeti is “WEH-tee”, etc.)

This is a very common request, and only with a lot of volunteer work will this happen. It has been attempted before. There are lots of recordings found on the audio corpus page of our wiki and on the audio board of our forums. have you visited those?

  3. hi im sabrina from germany…i search in the list ¨i see you¨ but i dont found this. what is ¨i see you¨ on na’vi??? i will learn this language (?) !!! :)

  4. Me and My husband want to learn this language fluently but I find it really difficult to understand the pronunciation of the navi words any references would be great

  5. Hello every body

I like this language so much , i just want to learn it ; mybe it’s hard but i will try and i hope many people to do that.

    Good luck every body

    • It really is a nice language. Sounds beautiful. Generally very consistent, relatively very simple grammar and everything. It’s good fun, and not hard to learn if you have the time and will to learn. :)

  6. Hello! It’s me or it’s really missing some basic words as for “to have” and “nice”? Maybe I didn’t search it properly.

    • There are different ways of saying things in different languages. Na’vi has an idiom that replaces the verb to have. You say something “is to me” to say “I have” something.

Lu oeru ikran -> an ikran is to me. -> I have an ikran.

Nice can be translated by meaning. When someone is nice, they are kind. tstunwi. When a thing looks nice, it can be said that it is beautiful or its appearance is beautiful. Lor. Another meaning of nice might be good. which is sìltsan. So I guess it depends on what you are actually trying to say.

      • Oh ok, I got it. Thank you for the help. It’s interesting how some sentences are constructed, you think it would be hard when it’s simpler than you would think.

P.S.: Out of the subject but I loved the picture at the top of the page, hehe :P

  7. I‘d like to learn the Na’vi, and the website is really helpful. But I have a question:what is the different between oe and oel .I know they both mean i or me

  8. Hi i am learning the language of the elves in the lord of the rings. and i would like to go on in na´vi language :). i have some questions.
Does this site have all the information i need about the navi langauge?
what language are the navi laoned from? (ex. Elvish is loaned from Latin/breton/english and more)
How do you say hi! how are you today?

Thanks in advantage :) i would like to hear from you soon. if you could contact me over facebook too i would be grateful.
Aa’ menealle nauva calen ar’ malta (elvish translated meaning. may your ways be green golden) :)

    • Just about everything known about the Na’vi language can be found on the Learnnavi.org site. Na’vi has some loan-words from various languages, but it is not based on any particular language.

If you have specific questions or thoughts, the forums are a great place to go.

By the way, “Hello! How are you?” = “Kaltxì! Ngaru lu fpom, srak?”.

Hope to see you on the forums!

  9. I love avatar and have wanted to learn the language so i watched the directors extended cut several times today from when i came across this site last night and have watched all the bonus content 1 of which was about the language! the language is primarily based on language heard by tribes in microneasia and a few words i heard in the film i dont think are right here! if you listen to Tsu’tey in the film when he translates for Jake he definately says wind there maybe my hearing is a bit off but maybe look at the language again and listen to that part again! just a small pointer into the language but certainly seems like a lot of theses words seem plausible

    • The information here is straight from the USC professor that created the Na’vi language. If you aren’t familiar with Na’vi, it can make interpreting what you hear in the film difficult sometimes. Come join our forums and you can chat about what you think of the film and the language with other fans. Incidentally, you are probably hearing Tsu’tey say “nìwin” which is Na’vi for “fast”. :)

  10. I’m trying to teach my friend to speak Na’vi and I ask if anyone knows the word for a society or community. I didn’t seem to find one, so if anyone would tell me that’d be great.
    Irayo si, Eywa ngahu!

    • -> rutxe oeru txoa livu

Navilator is a bit rubbish. It’s not only outdated, but has quite a few incorrect “translations” and it knows nothing of the grammar. I recommend not using it. (As embarrassing as this is to say as a LearnNavi representative)

Unfortunately, as of now, there exists no machine translation software that will translate English to Na’vi. There also exists no reliable machine translation software that will translate Na’vi into English. Honestly, it’s easiest to just learn the language. It’s not a very complicated language to learn. It’s surely the easiest language I have ever learned. Leagues easier than German, French, and even Spanish. And it’s fun. :D
